What types of conditions can massage therapy help with?

Massage therapy can help alleviate a wide range of conditions, offering relief for both chronic and acute pain issues. Common conditions that people often seek massage therapy for include back pain, neck and shoulder tension, headaches, sciatica, muscle strains, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and sports injuries. It can also support stress management, improve circulation, and enhance recovery from physical exertion, or recovery after an injury or surgery. Other conditions such as TMJ dysfunction, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and anxiety can be improved with regular massage therapy. By targeting problem areas and encouraging relaxation, massage therapy utilizes the parasympathetic nervous system to help your body heal as quickly and effectively as possible. Should I talk, or should I be quiet during a massage?

Should you talk or be quiet during your massage? The answer is quite simple–do whatever makes you most comfortable!! A good massage therapist will pick up on your cues, and chat if you would like, or preserve a peaceful quiet if that is preferred. Please don’t be afraid to let your LMT know if you do prefer one way or the other. We ask that if conversation is had, it is to be kept professional, avoiding sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or information that is otherwise inappropriate.

What is the difference between massage for relaxation and Medical Massage Therapy?

The term “Medical Massage Therapy” is a relatively new term, and generally speaking, it is massage therapy with the intent to reach a specific and measurable outcome, such as a decrease in muscle pain or neuropathy, or improving range of motion or the ability to complete activities of daily living. Massage for relaxation, or traditional massage is typically given more with the intent to decrease stress, increase relaxation, and boost mental health.

At Utah Medical Massage & Wellness, we understand the value of both schools of thought–incorporating relaxing aspects such as hot stones, hot towels, Swedish techniques and aromatherapy to each medical and therapeutic massage. Because when your body’s stress levels decrease, so does its ability to help heal itself.

Do I have to take off all of my clothing to get a massage?

The short answer, is no, undressing is not required to get a massage. Your comfort, and feelings of safety always come first, so we encourage you to keep on as much clothing as you choose, and we will withhold all judgement either way. For those who decide to undress for their massage, a large sheet will always be used to cover the body, and only the muscles being worked on at a given time will be undraped. If you choose to keep your clothing on, we recommend wearing loose-fitting, or stretchy exercise clothing that allows you to move freely. (Read more here). We even have a few licensed massage therapists who specialize in movement-based massage that is performed on clients who are fully dressed.

Should I keep my underwear on during a massage?

I once had a long time client ask me this question, stating she and her friend had a heated debate about the topic. We had a good chuckle, but all laughs aside, it’s a valid question! As stated in the answer above, it is never required that someone take more clothing off for a massage than they are comfortable with. As for the underwear debate, I would estimate that it is a pretty even 50/50. When gluteal work is recommended, such as the case for lower back pain or sciatica symtpoms, under-garments off allows for more access to these important muscles, but compression and mobility techniques can be done over clothing on that area as well. Hope that helps!
